Zachary Biech, BA (Hons), JD
Barrister & Solicitor
Founder and Principal
Background
My name is Zachary Biech, and I am from Cochrane, AB. I am a member of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, and a proud nēhiyaw.
I received an Honours Bachelor of Arts with High Distinction from the University of Toronto Faculty of Arts and Science in 2016, with a major in Public Policy and Governance and minors in Aboriginal Studies and Russian Language.
I also received a Juris Doctor with a Certificate in Aboriginal Legal Studies from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2019, along with the University of Toronto’s Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Award.
I was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2020, and I was called to the Bar in Alberta in 2023.
After articling with a major Aboriginal law firm in Toronto in 2019-2020, I joined a large national environmental law charity, where I worked as a staff lawyer on cutting-edge environmental legal issues with clients in Ontario and Alberta from 2021-2025.
Having worked in both the Aboriginal and environmental law fields, and in both private and charitable sectors, I have had the honour of working with a wide range of Indigenous communities, organizations, individuals, and allied NGOs, all of whom bring extraordinary dedication, knowledge, and creativity to the work of de-colonization.
The experience I gained from this work has shaped my practice deeply, and has inspired me to step into sole practice to bring my full skill set to the table. See also my consultancy firm, SĀKĀSTĒW STRATEGIES.
I am also an active participant in the legal community, including in the following roles:
- Member of the Indigenous Bar Association
- Member-at-Large of the Canadian Bar Association’s National Aboriginal Law Section Executive
- Member of the Law Society of Alberta’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee
In my personal time, I also volunteer as a board member for the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, and I am gradually learning nēhiyawewin.
